Gabriel Wainer, a professor in Carleton’s Department of Systems and Computer Engineering, is the winner of the Society for Modeling & Simulation International’s (SCS) 2015 Distinguished Service Award.

The SCS is a non-profit volunteer-driven corporation dedicated to advancing the use of modeling and simulation to solve real-world problems, to advance simulation and allied computer arts in all fields, and to facilitate communication among professionals in the field of simulation. This premier technical society achieves these goals through the organization of meetings, national and international conferences and a variety of publications.

The SCS Distinguished Service Award recognizes notable service to the society by a member at a level of dedication and achievement that is rarely seen. The award is given to a member who has made a series of significant contributions to SCS over a period of five to 10 years. Wainer is currently the vice-president of conferences and formerly the vice-president of publications, as well as a member of the society’s board of directors.

“Wainer has provided outstanding leadership to all general chairs and their committees,’’ SCS noted in a press release announcing the award. “He has been pivotal in establishing a process to improve the conference organization . . . He has also been responsible for bringing in new leadership by bringing in new tracks for new interesting research topics. Many improvements have been made because of Gabriel Wainer and for that we thank him with the Distinguished Service Award.”

Since coming to Carleton in July 2000 from the Universidad de Buenos Aires, Wainer has become the head of Carleton’s Advanced Real-Time Simulation Lab and a member of the Real-Time and Distributed Systems Lab.

Wainer will be presented with the SCS award at the opening ceremony of the Spring Simulation Multi-Conference 2016 in Pasadena, California in April.
